Kiruna Wagon delivers new special railcar for record-heavy transports – strengthening capacity for critical infrastructure logistics

Kiruna Wagon delivers a specially adapted railway wagon to Kraftdragarna, with a capacity of up to 490 tonnes, 32 axles and a length of approximately 74 metres – designed for Swedish railway and operating conditions.
Kiruna Wagon has signed an agreement with Kraftdragarna in Västerås for the delivery of a new specially adapted railway wagon with a load capacity of up to 490 tonnes. The delivery is scheduled for August 2028 and represents an important step in meeting the growing demand for advanced and critical infrastructure transports.
– We are very pleased to support Kraftdragarna in their continued development. This investment strengthens the overall system capacity and resilience in a changing world, says Mattias Gustafsson, Managing Director of Kiruna Wagon.
The new wagon is designed to handle extremely heavy components such as power transformers and other critical equipment for the energy sector. The design is adapted to Swedish railway conditions, with a focus on robust operation, efficient loading and high availability.
Kiruna Wagon has extensive experience in developing and delivering solutions for the heaviest rail transports, including wagons and components for the transport of transformers and pig iron. This experience has been central in the development of the current wagon, where high load capacity is combined with operational reliability and efficient handling throughout the entire transport chain.
– This type of solution places high demands on the interaction between the load, the wagon and the railway infrastructure. We are dealing with a structure of approximately 74 metres in length with 32 axles, where very high loads must be managed while ensuring the wagon can negotiate curves and operate within a restricted loading gauge. Our role is to optimise the entire load-bearing system – from load distribution and axle loads to dynamic performance in operation – enabling safe, efficient and precise transport execution, says Anders Viklund, Technical Director at Kiruna Wagon.
At the same time, the company sees a continued need to further develop the role of rail for the heaviest transports.
– For truly heavy and complex transports, rail is often the most robust and efficient alternative. We believe that rail, with solutions enabling high load capacity and high axle loads, will play an increasingly important role going forward – both for industrial competitiveness and for a long-term sustainable transport system, says Mattias Gustafsson.
