Kiruna Wagon has signed agreement with Egyptian Tahawy Rail for development and licensed manufacturing of self-discharging Side Dumper wagons.

Kiruna Wagon’s licensed partner in North Africa and Middle East, Tahawy Rail, has won the procurement from Egyptian National Railway (ENR) to deliver 300 self-discharging Side Dumper wagons.

Whilst the side tipping technology in its basic principles is proven for Boliden for more than 10 years, the new self-discharge function is based on innovative solutions. In this pre-development project one has managed to create a design that has both a lower tare weight and a lower centre of gravity than its predecessors. A design based on compact telescopic actuators which are easily available on the market, which also improves the wagons maintainability.

Another feature is that the new wagons can self-discharge anywhere along the tracks without using an external source of power. And also, they can discharge while the train is gently in motion.

Commenting on the technology, Kiruna Wagon’s Technical Sales Manager, Pawel Karas, said:

“The lower tare weight and centre of gravity give game-changing possibilities for both heavier payloads and larger loading volumes. Up to the level when mechanical, powered, and stationary unloading facilities in more cases won’t be necessary.”

Involved in the project is also Kiruna Wagon’s long-term partner, Amsted Rail, who will supply with the bogies.

This delivery will be the second in the collaboration between the two companies. In 2020 Kiruna Wagon delivered bottom doors for grain wagons to the same Egyptian client.
