Kiruna Wagon has just delivered the first batch of wagons in a series of 22 units to Södra Cell’s pulp mill in Värö, near Varberg.

– We’ve been working closely with the customer to meet their expectations. We’ve been flexible and open to changes along the way, and it’s great to now see the wagons rolling out,” says Carl Ordéus, Quality manager and purchasing at Kiruna Wagon.

The wagons, designed by Kiruna Wagon, have undergone extensive testing in harsh climates to ensure their reliability. They boast increased cargo capacity and an improved opening mechanism, perfect for transporting paper products along the Swedish West Coast.

– Most wagons on the market have regular sliding doors. What sets ours apart is that we’ve designed them with a big door on each side, providing access to the entire cargo area, explains Carl Ordéus.

The door is controlled by a hydraulic system with two lifting arms at each end of the wagon. The truck driver operates it using a remote control, powered by the platform’s electrical system. The cargo area measures 19.5 meters in length, 2.2 meters in width, and has an internal height of 2.4 meters.

– We have the capacity to build even bigger wagons, which is a development work we have now started. At Kiruna Wagon, our focus is on increasing capacity for our customers without compromising on either quality or longevity.

Södra Cell wanted a similar solution to previous wagons but with space for five bales instead of the usual two or three.

– With this new design, we’re increasing the capacity of our existing rail infrastructure by 25 percent. It’s a significant boost that allows us to ship more goods by rail, says Christer Larsson, department head at Södra Cell.

Kiruna Wagon handled the construction of the wagon bodies, while Rail-X AB supplied the undercarriages and managed the approval process and customer support. Local companies, such as Eurocon, Elkoll, and Nybergs Mekaniska Verkstad contributed expertise in electrical systems and hydraulics. Over half of the wagons have been delivered, with the rest currently in production.

This type of wagon provides access to the entire cargo area.
